Job Summary:

Tyax Lodge Heli Skiing is seeking Assistant/Apprentice Heli Ski Guides to join our team. As an Assistant Heli Ski Guide, you will support the Lead Guide leading groups of skiers through the backcountry terrain surrounding Tyax Lodge, ensuring their safety while delivering a safe and unforgettable heli-skiing experience. Your expertise in navigation, avalanche safety, and customer service will be essential in providing guests with an exceptional adventure in one of the world's premier heli-skiing destinations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist Heli Skiing: Second guide in single program guided heli-ski tours. Lead spilt groups when necessary. Provide clear instructions and safety briefings before each descent as directed from the Lead Guide.
  • Safety Management: Continuously assess and manage risks, including evaluating snow stability, avalanche risks, and weather conditions. Ensure all guests are equipped with and understand the use of safety gear such as avalanche transceivers, probes, and shovels.
  • Customer Engagement: Offer personalized service to guests, sharing your extensive knowledge of the terrain and providing tips to enhance their skiing experience.
  • Terrain Expertise: Maintain expert knowledge of the Tyax Lodge heli-skiing terrain, including key runs, snow quality, and environmental conditions. Adjust plans as necessary to provide the best possible experience.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Be ready to handle emergencies, including performing first aid, coordinating evacuations, and working closely with the helicopter pilot and team members.
  • Equipment Management: Assist guests with ski and safety equipment, ensuring proper fit and functionality. Regularly check and maintain your own gear.
  • Guest Experience: Create a welcoming and adventurous atmosphere, ensuring guests feel comfortable, confident, and excited throughout their heli-skiing experience.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with other guides, pilots, and lodge staff to ensure smooth operations and a seamless guest experience.
  • Environmental Stewardship: Promote and practice responsible skiing and environmental conservation, respecting the pristine wilderness of the Tyax area.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum of 1-3 years of experience as an assistant/apprentice ski guide.
  • Certification: Must hold relevant certifications, including CSGA (Canadian Ski Guide Association) Level 2 or , ACMG Apprentice Ski Guide (Association of Canadian Mountain Guides), Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA level 2 or higher), 80 hour Wilderness First Responder (WFR), or equivalent and CPR are required.
  • Skiing Ability: Expert skiing ability, with experience in deep powder and complex terrain. Strong proficiency in backcountry skiing techniques.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to instruct and guide guests of varying skill levels.
  • Physical Fitness: Exceptional physical fitness, capable of handling the demands of heli-ski guiding in high-altitude and remote environments.
  • Decision-Making: Strong ability to make quick, informed decisions in dynamic and potentially hazardous conditions.
  • Customer-Focused: A commitment to providing outstanding guest service, with a friendly and professional demeanor.
  • Team Player: Ability to work effectively within a close-knit team, contributing to a positive and cooperative working environment.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work in variable weather conditions, including extreme cold and heavy snowfall. Availability to work weekends and holidays during the heli-skiing season.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Local Knowledge: Familiarity with the Tyax Lodge heli-skiing terrain and surrounding area.
  • Helicopter Experience: Previous experience working with helicopters in a guiding context is highly desirable.
  • Language Skills: Proficiency in multiple languages, particularly German, French, or Spanish, is a plus.
